“Sonic Recollections of a Void: Otherwise Futures” comprises two sonic sculptures and a wallwork, all informed by Reyes-Retana’s investigation into a contact zone where a new chapter of outer space industrialization intersects with the power dynamics of the Mexico-US border. In this geopolitical context, the proximity of SpaceX’s launch facilities to the frontier allows sonic shock waves from lift-offs to cross into Mexico, causing distress in a neighboring community.
Jerónimo Reyes-Retana (b. 1984) is a researcher, artist, and community organizer from Mexico City. His work explores the poetics of infrastructure and the politics of noise in Latin American contact zones—sites shaped by the environmental, geopolitical, and social anxieties arising from the pursuit of progress.
