In Mathis Pfäffli's drawings, the line becomes the central element, oscillating between drawing, sign and language. Pfäffli's pictorial worlds are associative and in constant motion, similar to a drift or dérive - a term that describes both drifting and steering. His drawings navigate between lines that are sometimes narrative, sometimes abstract, creating a network of topical lines that shape places and milieus. These lines are neither utopian nor dystopian, but topical: they wander, drift and create spaces that are constantly changing. In Pfäffli's work, human profiles merge with abstract forms, spheres become pupils, and technical dynamics fail in absurd contexts.
Mathis Pfäffli (b.1983) is a Swiss artist living in Zurich. His work meanders between drawing, object, installation. A told story can play a role, often you have to imagine the narratives yourself. The boundaries of the works are sometimes not easy to recognize, much frays at the edges and mixes with the existing. Recent exhibitions have been held at Kunstmuseum Luzern, Instituto Svizerro in Rome, Damien & The Love Guru and Saint-Martin Bookshop in Brussels and Suprainfinit Gallery in Bucharest, La Dépendance in St-Imier, Projekt-Links in Bern.
