The paintings by Johanna Seidel (1993) are contemporary echoes of the Sapphic tradition, rich, sophisticated and proud. Her works encompass many genres, from still-lifes to landscapes to portraits, as if anything can be part of her quiet and slightly enigmatic surfaces. She sometimes intentionally incorporates decorative curves and symbols. Her small-scale paintings often focus on snapshot moments of life, a habit that might have developed from casual photography in the age of self-media.
Johanna Seidel (1993) is a Dresden based artist with an MFA from Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (2021). Recent exhibitions were held at Museum Gunzenhauser (Chemnitz), GAA Gallery (New York), and CLC Gallery Venture (Beijing). Seidel brings female protagonists to the fore, depicting allegorical scenes that combine intimate, personal narratives with mythic, surreal elements.
